Bratislava - Kuty (in the direction of the Czech Republic), Bratislava - Horna Streda (after Piestany), Liptovska Tepla - Hybe; Kosice - Presov (in a west - east direction). Other motorway sections are under construction. In 2005 the motorway network will have reached 648 km.
Road marking is in accordance with European norms.

The maximum speed limit in:

Alcohol consumption is prohibited; the use of seat belts is compulsory, in towns also. Unleaded petrol is offered by petrol stations. Throughout Slovakia, motorists' services are found: petrol stations, resting places, car services, camp sites, motels and motorests.

The density of the railway network - 74 m/km2. Geographically, the railway tracks in Slovakia mostly lead in a west-east direction: Bratislava - Zvolen - Kosice and in a south-north direction: Bratislava - Vrutky- Poprad - the Tatras - Kosice. The main tracks are joined by important additional tracks. The newly accomplished European railway projects of the so-called Danube axis, in their use of the section Marchegg - Devinska Nova Ves, have contributed to the significance of the railway network of the Slovak Republic.

Air transport:

The crossroads of the international air corridors is the capital of the Slovak Republic, Bratislava. The M. R. Stefánik airport is located in suburban Ivanka, It transports approximately 2 million passengers annually. River transport:

Length of navigable rivers - 2,372 km.
Of the rivers flowing through the Slovak Republic, the Danube is used for river transport (172 km). Regular passenger transport is provided by the Slovak Danube shipping company. It augments its services by offering social entertainment and tourist and historic trips via the interconnection of the river Danube with the rivers Rhone and Main. River transport is also available between: Bratislava - Vienna - Bratislava; Bratislava - Hainburg Bratislava; Vienna - Bratislava - Budapest.

Money changing:

It is possible to change money directly at a border- crossing in exchange offices. Exchange offices are located in all bank and savings-bank branches, in bigger department stores, in post offices and travel agencies. Automatic banking machines (hole in the wall machines) are increasing in number in Slovakia. Many of these machines will enable the withdrawal of Slovak currency using cards issued by many foreign banks (bearing "Maestro" symbol)

Eurocard/Mastercard credit cards are accepted by: VUB - General Credit Bank (Vseobecna uverova banka), Slovak Saving-bank (Slovenska sporitelna), Communal Bank (Komunalna banka).

VISA, American Express and Eurochecque cards are accepted by banks and big international hotels. Money changing other than at official exchange offices is not recommended.

Petrol stations are to be found along each route of the road network, in towns and bigger villages.
Types of fuels are: BA 91, BA 91 UNI, BA 95 UNI, BA 95 N, diesel fuel.

Transport in towns:

For a journey on city public transport - buses, trams, trolleybuses - it is necessary to have a ticket. Single-journey tickets can be bought from automats at stops or at news-stands. There is a taxi service in all Slovak towns.

Parking:

Parking in town centres is recommended only at designated places. The safest parking is at guarded pay-car-parks. In the centre of the capital city a parking card and automatic payment system is in operation. You can buy these cards at news-stands or at post offices. The driver marks it and puts it in a visible place in the car. Failure to do so may result in a fine of between 100 to 500Sk or wheel-clamping.

Eating and drinking:

In Slovakia there is a large choice of restaurants, wine-bars, bistros, cafés, beer-taverns and smaller refreshment places. The choice of meals is varied - from international cuisine to typical Slovak dishes. In most restaurants there are menus in foreign languages ( English, German, Italian and others).

Most of the shops usual open from Monday to Friday from 6:00 to 18:00. In some smaller shops there is a lunch break from 12:00 to 14:00. On Saturday shops are open from 8:00 to 12:00. In bigger towns there are are some selected non-stop shops open. Large department stores and shopping centres are open until 19:00, on Saturday to 16:00 and some also on Sunday to 17:00. After this time the VECIERKA chain of shops is available. These are open to about 21:00 and on Saturdays and Sundays to 16:00.
